In Sufi orders, dhikr is considered the greatest form of worship that brings the servant closer to their Lord and the most crucial element of *riy\u0101zah*, the practice of self-discipline. The sheikhs assign the most suitable form of dhikr according to the condition of the disciple and guide them toward the Truth. The disciple repeats the given dhikr the prescribed number of times. In Sufi orders, dhikr is also performed collectively under the guidance of the sheikh or his deputy, where certain phrases are recited in a particular sequence with specific movements. These collective forms of dhikr are called *tar\u012bqat rituals* (tar\u00eekat \u00e2yini).[\/vc_column_text]

Vocal Dhikr (Cehr\u00ee Zikir)<\/h2>\n In Sufi orders whose spiritual lineage traces back to \u02bfAl\u012b, such as Q\u0101diriyya, Rif\u0101\u02bfiyya, Suhrawardiyya, Sa\u02bfdiyya, Sh\u0101dhiliyya, Badawiyya, Khalwatiyya, Bayramiyya, and Mawlawiyya, dhikr is typically performed aloud (cehr\u00ee) and with movement. It often involves the repetition of certain Names from the *asm\u0101\u02be al-\u1e25usn\u0101* (Beautiful Names of God), the *kalimat al-taw\u1e25\u012bd* (l\u0101 il\u0101ha ill\u0101 All\u0101h), or the Divine Name itself (*ism al-dh\u0101t*). Through these practices, the seven levels of the soul (*nafs*), from the commanding soul (*amm\u0101rah*) to the perfected one (*k\u0101milah*), are gradually traversed. Since this method includes invoking various Names of God, it is also referred to as the *path of names* (*esm\u0101 \u1e6dar\u012bq\u012b*). Sufi orders that follow vocal dhikr have collective dhikr forms known by names such as *majlis*, *\u1e25a\u1e0drah*, *layla*, *dhikr-i erre*, *sam\u0101\u02bf*, and *devr\u0101n*, often accompanied by music.<\/span>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Silent Dhikr (Haf\u00ee Zikir)<\/h2>\n In the Naqshbandiyya order, which traces its spiritual chain to Ab\u016b Bakr, dhikr is generally performed silently (*haf\u00ee*) and from the heart. This includes the remembrance of the Divine Name (*ism al-dh\u0101t* \u2014 All\u0101h) and the *dhikr of negation and affirmation* (l\u0101 il\u0101ha ill\u0101 All\u0101h). While performing the dhikr alone, the disciple sits in calm and focuses on the five spiritual faculties (*la\u1e6d\u0101\u02beif al-khamsah*) believed to reside in the chest: *qalb* (heart), *r\u016b\u1e25* (spirit), *sirr* (secret), *khaf\u012b* (hidden), and *akhf\u0101* (most hidden). When all these faculties join the remembrance, including the *nafs* believed to be between the eyebrows, the entire body becomes engaged in dhikr. After this, one proceeds to the *kalimat al-taw\u1e25\u012bd*. Music<\/h2>\n In some Sufi orders, music is occasionally integrated with dhikr. In those that perform vocal dhikr, forms of *tekke* (Sufi lodge) music are practiced in an exuberant style. To support rhythm, percussion instruments such as *hal\u012bleh*, *mazhar*, *bend\u012br*, *kud\u016bm*, *navbah*, and the reed flute (*ney*) are used. These sessions are directed by the sheikh, head chanter (*z\u0101kirba\u015f\u0131*), floor steward (*meydanc\u0131*), and leaders, and they last as long as deemed appropriate. While the dervishes perform dhikr, the chanters sing *il\u0101h\u012bs* (divine hymns) matching the rhythm. In orders that perform silent dhikr, musical recitation is limited to Qur\u2019anic til\u0101wah, adh\u0101n, *q\u0101mah*, *\u1e63al\u0101t*, *takb\u012br*, and *tasb\u012b\u1e25*.<\/span>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Awr\u0101d and A\u1e25z\u0101b<\/h2>\n In Sufi orders, acts of worship, supplication, and remembrance performed at specific times and quantities with the permission of a spiritual guide are called *awr\u0101d* (plural of *wird*). Prayers made to attain specific goals are known as *a\u1e25z\u0101b* (plural of *\u1e25izb*). The oldest and most comprehensive source on *awr\u0101d* is *Q\u016bt al-qul\u016bb* by Ab\u016b \u1e6c\u0101lib al-Makk\u012b (d. 996). Over time, many Sufi orders have developed collections of *awr\u0101d* and *a\u1e25z\u0101b*, often compiled by the founding sheikhs themselves.<\/p>\n

\u1e24izb al-Ba\u1e25r and \u1e24izb al-Barr<\/b><\/p>\n

Prepared by Ab\u016b\u2019l-\u1e24asan al-Sh\u0101dhil\u012b (d. 1258), the founder of the Sh\u0101dhiliyya order. These are among the most widely read *awr\u0101d*, containing concise glorifications and supplications.<\/p>\n

Awr\u0101d al-Fat\u1e25iyya<\/b><\/p>\n

Another well-known compilation arranged by Sayyid \u02bfAl\u012b Hamad\u0101n\u012b (d. 1335) of the Kubrawiyya order. It includes numerous phrases starting with *istighf\u0101r* (seeking forgiveness), *taw\u1e25\u012bd*, *sub\u1e25\u0101nall\u0101h*, *\u1e25asbunall\u0101h*, and *\u1e63alaw\u0101t*.<\/p>\n

Wird al-Satt\u0101r<\/b><\/p>\n

One of the most famous *awr\u0101d* in various Sufi orders, compiled by the second pir of the Khalwatiyya, Sayyid Ya\u1e25y\u0101 al-Shirw\u0101n\u012b (d. 1466). It begins with \u201cY\u0101 Satt\u0101r\u201d and is widely known as *Wird al-Satt\u0101r*.<\/p>\n
