From the Streets of Plovdiv to Beyo\u011flu<\/h2>\n The most important educational institution in Ken\u2019\u00e2n Rif\u00e2\u00ee\u2019s life was Galatasaray Mekteb-i Sult\u00e2n\u00eesi, which he started at the age of eight and attended for about eleven years (1877-1888). He received his initial education at the S\u0131byan School in Plovdiv. His father, Abd\u00fclhalim Bey, while preparing to leave Plovdiv, first enrolled his son as a permanent boarding student at Galatasaray.<\/p>\n

Rif\u00e2\u00ee, a literature department student, had the opportunity to read both classical and modern works of French, German, and Latin\u2014the root of many European languages\u2014through his education. <\/strong>He also studied Arabic and Persian, important for religious and Sufi sciences, during his Sult\u00e2n\u00ee education.<\/p>\n

The most important skill Ken\u2019\u00e2n Rif\u00e2\u00ee gained from Galatasaray Mekteb-i Sult\u00e2n\u00eesi was, in line with the school\u2019s purpose, the ability to synthesize different cultures. Indeed, during his duties as director of education and as a tekke sheikh, he used this skill, acquired through his Sult\u00e2n\u00ee education, as a tool for improving individuals and society, especially for overcoming cultural dilemmas.<\/strong><\/span>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Brief History of Galatasaray Mekteb-i Sult\u00e2n\u00eesi<\/h2>\n Galatasaray Mekteb-i Sult\u00e2n\u00eesi holds an important place in Turkish educational history, with roots dating back to the reign of Sultan Bayezid II. According to legend, upon returning from a hunt, the Sultan met an elderly man known as G\u00fclbaba. Pleased with his hospitality and conversation, the Sultan asked if he had a wish. G\u00fclbaba pointed to the slopes of Beyo\u011flu where the high school now stands and expressed his desire for a school to be built there.<\/strong> Founded in 1431 as the Galata Saray\u0131 Ender\u00fbn Mektebi, this institution underwent several changes over time.<\/p>\n

The 19th century was a period when modernization efforts accelerated in the Ottoman Empire. The Ender\u00fbn School, one of the significant educational institutions in the country, was not exempt from this change. The Ender\u00fbn School later transformed into the Galatasaray Medical School and then the Galatasaray Mekteb-i Sult\u00e2n\u00eesi.<\/strong> This institution would later serve as a model for high schools opened in other provinces.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Mekteb-i Sult\u00e2n\u00ee started education on September 1, 1868. Its aim was to train competent civil servants for the state and to form an elite class needed during the implementation of the Tanzimat reforms. Many graduates of this school served in important state positions.<\/p>\n

After the proclamation of the Republic in 1923, the name Mekteb-i Sult\u00e2n\u00ee was changed to Galatasaray High School, and since 1994, Galatasaray University has been included within the institution.<\/span>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Ali Su\u00e2vi (d. 1878)<\/h2>\n A thinker and activist during the late Ottoman period, journalist, member of the Young Ottoman Society, and one of the first Turkish nationalists. Although Ali Su\u00e2vi did not receive a classical madrasa education or formal schooling, he engaged with many subjects including philosophy, philology, history, geography, literature, politics, sociology, economics, and religious sciences. He particularly focused on issues related to Turkish nationalism, Islamism, language simplification, state administration, the caliphate, politics, and morality, seeking solutions to the problems of the Ottoman state and society.<\/p>\n

It is worth noting that Ken\u2019\u00e2n Rif\u00e2\u00ee\u2019s early years at Galatasaray Sult\u00e2n\u00eesi coincided with Ali Su\u00e2vi\u2019s tenure as director (until 1878). Starting from his appointment in 1877, Ali Su\u00e2vi implemented a series of reforms reflecting the educational understanding of the Abd\u00fclhamid era, which later served as a model for further reforms. These included appointing teachers mostly of Turkish and Muslim origin and incorporating Arabic, Ottoman Turkish, Persian, ethics, and creed courses into the curriculum.<\/span>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Rec\u00e2iz\u00e2de Mahmud Ekrem (d. 1914)<\/h2>\n One of the leading poets and writers of 19th-century Ottoman Turkish literature. He was a principal representative of the Reform Movement (Tanzimat) which began with \u015ein\u00e2si in the 1860s and developed through Nam\u0131k Kemal and Abd\u00fclhak H\u00e2mid. Although Rec\u00e2iz\u00e2de Ekrem was close to the members of the Young Ottomans Society, he did not participate actively in politics but focused more on literary reform. During his teaching at both the Mekteb-i Sult\u00e2n\u00ee and Mekteb-i M\u00fclkiye, his authoritative personality earned him the affection of his students, who called him \u201cMaster Ekrem.\u201d He contributed to the development of European poetry and literature through his works, ideas, and guidance to young people.<\/span>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Muallim N\u00e2ci (d. 1893)<\/h2>\n Muallim N\u00e2ci was a Turkish writer, poet, teacher, and critic. He was a Tanzimat-period poet who worked to perfectly adapt the Arabic prosody (aruz) to Turkish. Advocating renewal without breaking ties with the old, he is considered a representative of \u201cold poetry\u201d in literary history. From 1983, he managed the literature page of the newspaper Terc\u00fcm\u00e2n-\u0131 Hak\u00eekat<\/em> for some time.<\/p>\n

Influences of Muallim N\u00e2ci, who largely maintained a traditional approach, can be felt in Rif\u00e2\u00ee\u2019s poetry. His strong rapport with his teachers is also notable. Muallim N\u00e2ci called Rif\u00e2\u00ee an \u201corator\u201d because of his poetry reading skills. It is recorded that Muallim N\u00e2ci wrote this couplet for Rif\u00e2\u00ee: \u201cIs there any gazelle like you in the world? \/ Are you Yusuf of Ken\u2019\u00e2n with this beauty?\u201d Also, about ten years after Rif\u00e2\u00ee\u2019s graduation, when asked \u201cTeacher, have you forgotten me?\u201d by Rif\u00e2\u00ee, Muallim N\u00e2ci replied, \u201cCan Ken\u2019\u00e2n\u2019s lands be forgotten? Muallim (Ahmed) Feyz\u00ee (d. 1910)<\/h2>\n Muallim Ahmed Feyzi, one of the last bureaucrats, educators, writers, and poets, was born in Tabriz. He was the son of the scholar Esed Molla. After receiving education at Al-Azhar, he came to Istanbul and obtained Ottoman citizenship, subsequently serving in educational roles. He taught Persian at Galatasaray Sult\u00e2n\u00eesi and wrote articles under the pen name \u201cS\u00fcr\u00fb\u015f\u201d for the newspaper Terc\u00fcm\u00e2n-\u0131 Hak\u00eekat<\/em>.<\/span>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n

M\u00fcnif Mehmet Pasha (d. 1910)<\/h2>\n M\u00fcnif Mehmet Pasha (d. 1910), Ken\u2019\u00e2n Rif\u00e2\u00ee\u2019s psychology teacher, was a thinker and educator who, despite coming from a madrasa background, interacted with different intellectual circles while working at the B\u00e2b\u0131\u00e2li translation office and serving as chief secretary at the Berlin Embassy. He was known for opposing customs that held society back. According to Hilmi Ziya \u00dclken, M\u00fcnif Pasha was a teacher of progressive civilization and played a role in late Ottoman education similar to that of 18th-century French encyclopedists.<\/span>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Mehmet Zihn\u00ee Efendi (d. 1919)<\/h2>\n Mehmed Zihn\u00ee Efendi was an educator who held the position of ul\u00fbm-i \u00e2liye (medrese faculty) and served on many commissions and assemblies within the Ministry of Education. When he started teaching Arabic and religious sciences at Galatasaray Mekteb-i Sult\u00e2n\u00eesi in 1879, Ken\u2019\u00e2n Rif\u00e2\u00ee was a student in the school\u2019s secondary section. Zihn\u00ee Efendi was an intelligent, attentive, critical, and disciplined scholar. Hulus\u00ee K\u0131l\u0131\u00e7 writes in the Islam Encyclopedia<\/em>: \u201cDuring his teaching at Galatasaray Mekteb-i Sult\u00e2n\u00eesi and Mekteb-i M\u00fclkiye, he trained many valuable students through his pioneering teaching. Babanz\u00e2de Ahmed N\u00e2im, Ali Nazim\u00e2, Ken\u2019\u00e2n Rif\u00e2\u00ee, Hanbel\u00eez\u00e2de Muhammed \u015e\u00e2kir, and Abd\u00fclhak \u015ein\u00e2si Hisar were among them.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rif\u00e2\u00ee benefited from Mehmet Zihn\u00ee Efendi to enrich his religious knowledge.<\/span>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n
