\nIn Sufism, the term \u201ckashf\u201d (discovery) refers to a direct method of acquiring knowledge about divine matters, where the intellect and senses fall short. Sufis emphasize that the heart has two dimensions: one that perceives the physical world and another that perceives the unseen and angelic realm. Hence, Sufism is referred to as “\u2018ilm al-qul\u016bb” (the science of hearts), and Sufis as “a\u1e63\u1e25\u0101b al-qul\u016bb” (people of hearts) or “ahl al-lis\u0101n” (people of the inner tongue). For the heart to connect with the angelic world and receive divine insights, it must be purified from all evils. Once purified, the veils over the heart are lifted, and divine or angelic knowledge is revealed. \u201cKashf\u201d is thus defined as \u201cknowing things hidden behind the veil and beyond reason,\u201d and \u201cwitnessing the manifestations of Allah.\u201d

Muk\u0101shafa<\/h2>\n The term \u201cmuk\u0101shafa,\u201d which means the lifting of the veil between two things and their mutual disclosure, is often used synonymously with kashf. Sufism is referred to as the \u201cscience of muk\u0101shafa,\u201d and Sufis as \u201cahl al-muk\u0101shafa\u201d or \u201cahl al-kashf,\u201d indicating the concept\u2019s importance in this field. Related terms such as \u201cfath\u201d (opening), \u201cmush\u0101hada\u201d (witnessing), \u201ctajalli\u201d (manifestation), and \u201cilh\u0101m\u201d (inspiration) also bear close meanings to kashf.<\/span>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n

Kashf<\/div>\n Special knowledge of letters<\/span>\n

Science of the Elite (\u02bfIlm al-\u1e24av\u0101\u1e63)<\/h2>\n Those who purify their souls through spiritual struggle and attach their hearts to Allah gain access to divine secrets, uncovering hidden meanings in the Qur\u2019an and Hadith that are not apparent to everyone. This knowledge is called the \u201cscience of the elite\u201d (\u02bfilm al-\u1e25av\u0101\u1e63), and those who possess it are called \u201c\u1e25av\u0101\u1e63\u201d or, if highly elevated, \u201ckh\u0101\u1e63\u1e63 al-kh\u0101\u1e63\u1e63.\u201d Within this field, the science of letters (\u02bfilm al-\u1e25ur\u016bf), based on the mystical meanings of letters, holds a special place. Since words, including the Divine Names (asm\u0101\u02be al-\u1e25usn\u0101), are believed to be formed from meaningful letter combinations, they are included in the science of letters. It is stressed that this knowledge is derived from kashf (discovery) and ilh\u0101m (inspiration). However, it should not be confused with the 14th-century B\u0101\u1e6din\u012b-inspired movement of \u1e24ur\u016bfism founded by Fa\u1e0dlull\u0101h al-\u1e24ur\u016bf\u012b.<\/p>\n

Shams al-Ma\u02bf\u0101rif<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

The most renowned work on this topic is Shams al-Ma\u02bf\u0101rif al-Kubr\u0101<\/em> by the North African scholar Ahmad ibn \u02bfAl\u012b al-B\u016bn\u012b (d. 1225). It includes topics such as the science of letters, numerology, geomancy (\u02bfilm al-jafr and wafq), astronomy, the elements, constellations, talismans, incantations, invocations, and alchemy. The author notes that only those who mention Allah regularly, purify themselves both outwardly and inwardly, and follow the spiritual path (sul\u016bk) can benefit from it, emphasizing its Sufi nature.<\/p>\n

Esoteric (Ish\u0101r\u012b) Qur\u2019anic Commentary<\/h2>\n Through kashf, Sufis interpret verses of the Qur\u2019an based on knowledge that arises in their hearts. One of the first to express such meanings, albeit limited to certain verses, was Ab\u016b Sulaym\u0101n al-D\u0101r\u0101n\u012b (d. 830). The partial commentary of Sahl al-Tustar\u012b, Tafs\u012br al-Qur\u02be\u0101n al-\u02bfA\u1e93\u012bm<\/em>, has survived. Although the full commentary by Ibn \u02bfAt\u0101 and Ab\u016b Bakr al-W\u0101si\u1e6d\u012b, regarded as the first complete esoteric tafs\u012brs, did not survive, Sufis continued interpreting the Qur\u2019an via kashf and even confirmed the authenticity of certain hadiths not accepted by traditional scholars.<\/p>\n

Attributed to Sahl ibn \u02bfAbdull\u0101h al-Tustar\u012b (d. 896), this commentary provides esoteric interpretations for one or more verses from each s\u016bra. It is the earliest surviving Sufi tafs\u012br and served as a source for many later commentaries.<\/p>\n

The esoteric tafs\u012br of Ism\u0101\u02bf\u012bl \u1e24aqq\u012b Bursev\u012b (d. 1725), written in Arabic in three volumes, was completed in 1705. Though primarily mystical, it also includes both traditional (riw\u0101ya) and rational (dir\u0101ya) elements. Its primary Sufi source is Najm al-D\u012bn al-D\u0101ya\u2019s Ba\u1e25r al-\u1e24aq\u0101\u02beiq<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Men of the Unseen (Rij\u0101l al-Ghayb)<\/h2>\n According to Sufi knowledge through kashf, among Allah\u2019s saints (awliy\u0101\u02be) there are individuals known as \u201crij\u0101l al-ghayb\u201d (men of the unseen) who maintain spiritual balance in the world, provide blessings, and repel evils. First articulated by the Sufi Mu\u1e25ammad ibn \u02bfAl\u012b al-Katt\u0101n\u012b (d. 934), this concept was accepted and elaborated upon by Sufis like al-\u1e24ak\u012bm al-Tirmidh\u012b, Ab\u016b \u1e6c\u0101lib al-Makk\u012b, Sulam\u012b, Qushayr\u012b, Hujw\u012br\u012b, and al-Ghaz\u0101l\u012b. Ibn al-\u02bfArab\u012b placed it at the core of Sufi metaphysics. Sources describe the titles, duties, numbers, and locations of these saints, noting a spiritual hierarchy, with the highest rank known as \u201cqu\u1e6db,\u201d \u201cqu\u1e6db al-aq\u1e6d\u0101b,\u201d \u201cghawth,\u201d or \u201cghawth al-a\u02bf\u1e93am.\u201d<\/span>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n

Qutb \/ Ghawth<\/h2>\n Just as angels are assigned to natural phenomena like rain, sun, and wind, unseen saints are believed to be entrusted with divine tasks in the world. They assist those in need when invoked. The qutb is therefore also known as \u201cghawth\u201d (helper). Among the Companions, \u02bfUmar ibn al-Kha\u1e6d\u1e6d\u0101b is particularly mentioned in this context. It is narrated that while delivering a sermon in Madinah, he called out to his commander S\u0101riyya in Iran\u2019s battlefield, warning him: \u201cO S\u0101riyya! Head for the mountain!\u201d which the commander miraculously heard and obeyed, saving his army. Another account mentions \u02bfUmar writing a letter to the Nile, commanding it to flow as before \u2014 and it did, ending a yearly drought that led to human sacrifices.<\/span>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n
