Physical Characteristics of the Derg\u00e2h<\/h2>\n \u00dcmm\u00fc Ken\u2019\u00e2n Derg\u00e2h\u0131 was constructed in the garden of the mansion owned by Ken\u2019\u00e2n Rif\u00e2\u00ee, located on K\u0131rtay Street in the Fatih district of Istanbul.<\/strong> This structure was designed according to the derg\u00e2h-h\u00e2ne model. The three-story wooden derg\u00e2h building has a connecting corridor on the second floor linking the mansion and the tekke. \u00dcmm\u00fc Ken\u2019\u00e2n Derg\u00e2h\u0131\u2019s interior maintains the characteristics of a traditional Rif\u00e2\u00ee derg\u00e2h. Accordingly, inside the derg\u00e2h there is a sem\u00e2h\u00e2ne or tevhidh\u00e2ne typical of traditional Rif\u00e2\u00ee tekkes. The courtyard of the derg\u00e2h is square-shaped with a wooden floor.<\/p>\n

After the closure of tekkes and zaviyas, Ken\u2019\u00e2n Rif\u00e2\u00ee\u2019s \u00dcmm\u00fc Ken\u2019\u00e2n Derg\u00e2h\u0131 was used as the family residence. The building, which deteriorated over time, was completely demolished in 2007 and rebuilt faithfully to its original form. Since then, the building has continued to serve under the name Ken\u2019\u00e2n Rif\u00e2\u00ee Institute of Sufi Studies.<\/span>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Ken\u2019\u00e2n Rif\u00e2\u00ee\u2019s Practices at \u00dcmm\u00fc Ken\u2019\u00e2n Derg\u00e2h\u0131<\/h2>\n From 1908 onwards, Ken\u2019\u00e2n Rif\u00e2\u00ee Hazretleri was involved in guiding disciples at \u00dcmm\u00fc Ken\u2019\u00e2n Derg\u00e2h\u0131 according to the Rif\u00e2\u00ee spiritual path (seyr\u00fcs\u00fcl\u00fbk). Essentially, Ken\u2019\u00e2n Rif\u00e2\u00ee adopted the Rif\u00e2\u00ee method for his dervishes and provided training accordingly. However, for those requesting, he also practiced the methods of three other tariqas he was authorized in, depending on place and need.<\/p>\n

\u00dcmm\u00fc Ken\u2019\u00e2n Derg\u00e2h\u0131 operated between 1908 and 1925 and was one of the spiritual centers of its era. Like every derg\u00e2h having mukabele (Qur\u2019an recital) nights, this sacred place held mukabele, dhikr, and burh\u00e2n ceremonies on Friday nights (the nights connecting Thursday to Friday). After Friday prayers, Mesnev\u00ee recitations were performed.<\/p>\n

It has been conveyed by Z\u00e2kirba\u015f\u0131 Sal\u00e2h\u00ee Dede, one of the last cultural heirs and called \u201cthe last chief dhikr leader,\u201d that the dhikr openings performed by Z\u00e2kirba\u015f\u0131 Ya\u015far Efendi were more artistic and powerful than those in any other derg\u00e2h.<\/strong><\/p>\n

During the dhikr ceremonies, the ritual for dervishes entering the courtyard was as follows: first, they placed their right foot crosswise over the left to seal and offer respect. The dervishes then brought their hands to their chests, bowed slightly, and after a moment of respectful supplication, carefully entered without stepping on the threshold. Those entering the courtyard performed prayers, then sat after a short period of prostration. Following this, they began the ceremony with the recitation of Surah Al-Fatiha. It is known that the dhikr ceremony started with dervishes reading small or large parts of the Rif\u00e2\u00ee litany (evr\u00e2d), depending on the importance of the day, and lasted approximately two hours. On holy nights such as Kandil nights, the months of Muharram and Ramadan, and during festivals, the excitement, spiritual atmosphere, and activity in the derg\u00e2h increased, as was common in many tekkes.<\/span>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\u00dcmm\u00fc Ken'\u00e2n Derg\u00e2h\u0131<\/div>\n Sources state that \u00dcmm\u00fc Ken\u2019\u00e2n Derg\u00e2h\u0131 was renowned as a place frequented by more enlightened individuals compared to its counterparts in Istanbul. K\u00e2z\u0131m B\u00fcy\u00fckaksoy records that about fifteen sheikhs regularly attended the zikr held on Fridays at \u00dcmm\u00fc Ken\u2019\u00e2n Derg\u00e2h\u0131. According to conversation notes, Rif\u00e2\u00ee\u2019s mansion and tekke served as a gathering place for prominent Sufi masters and religious scholars of the period. As a social institution, the tekke fulfilled many functions at that time. For example, during the War of Independence, some derg\u00e2hs in Istanbul decided to collectively recite salav\u00e2t-\u0131 \u015fer\u00eefe for the victorious success of the armies. Records indicate that fifty-five Istanbul tekkes were assigned to perform collective salavat recitations, with \u00dcmm\u00fc Ken\u2019\u00e2n Derg\u00e2h\u0131 listed seventeenth in these documents. It was an important center in alleviating feelings of despair and fatigue that affected society during the war years.<\/span>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Tekke Sheikhdom<\/h2>\n Authorizations (\u0130c\u00e2zet)<\/strong><\/p>\n

  1. Ken\u2019\u00e2n Rif\u00e2\u00ee received K\u0101diriyye authorization from Filibeli Edhem Efendi.<\/li>\n
  2. He completed his Rif\u00e2iyye spiritual path (seyr\u00fcs\u00fcl\u00fbk) in Medina and received Rif\u00e2\u00ee authorization from Hamza er-Rif\u00e2\u00ee Hazretleri.<\/li>\n
  3. Ken\u2019\u00e2n Rif\u00e2\u00ee\u2019s Mesnev\u00ee recitations attracted affection and interest in derg\u00e2h circles, and as a result of this positive effect, the Konya Mevlev\u00eeh\u00e2ne granted him honorary Mevlev\u00ee authorization. Ken\u2019\u00e2n Rif\u00e2\u00ee states that he received his Mevlev\u00ee authorization in Medina directly from the meaning of the Prophet himself.<\/li>\n
  4. Among the tariqas Ken\u2019\u00e2n Rif\u00e2\u00ee was authorized to guide in spiritual training is the Sh\u00e2zeliyye. The Sh\u00e2zel\u00ee authorization he received honorarily comes from a \u015e\u00e2zel\u00ee sheikh based in Bursa.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Official Duty as Sheikh and Tekke Administration<\/h2>\n Ken\u2019\u00e2n Rif\u00e2\u00ee served as the tekke sheikh of \u00dcmm\u00fc Ken\u2019\u00e2n Derg\u00e2h\u0131 in Fatih for seventeen years from 1908 until the closure of tekkes in December 1925.<\/strong> Although he did not have formal madrasa education, he possessed strong religious and Sufi knowledge. His first source in this regard was his mother, Hat\u00eece Cenan Han\u0131m. Ken\u2019\u00e2n Rif\u00e2\u00ee received his initial religious education at the Filibe S\u0131byan School; during his Sultan\u00ee education, he improved his knowledge in fundamental Islamic sciences such as theology (akaid), Qur\u2019anic recitation (k\u0131r\u00e2at), and Islamic ethics.<\/p>\n

    Rif\u00e2\u00ee was proficient in Arabic and Persian, the two main languages of Islamic culture, at translation and authorship levels. He independently read and studied the classical works in these languages as they were commonly presented at the time.<\/strong><\/p>\n

    Ken\u2019\u00e2n Rif\u00e2\u00ee\u2019s goal in imparting knowledge, love, and self-discipline was to cultivate peaceful, sincere Muslims in harmony with themselves and the universe. (Cem\u00e2lnur Sargut)<\/p>\n

    Closure of Tekkes and Ken\u2019\u00e2n Rif\u00e2\u00ee\u2019s Attitude<\/strong><\/p>\n

    With the Official Gazette announcement dated December 13, 1925, tekkes, zaviyas, and tombs were closed. At that time in Turkey, the K\u0101diriyye, Nak\u015fibendiyye, Halvetiyye, Mevleviyye, Bekt\u00e2\u015f\u00eelik, Bayr\u00e2miyye, Celvetiyye, S\u00e2diyye, and Rif\u00e2iyye tariqas were active with many branches.<\/p>\n

    Following the closure decision, Ken\u2019\u00e2n Rif\u00e2\u00ee ended tekke activities and dissolved his foundation.<\/strong> Rif\u00e2\u00ee respected the government\u2019s decision and ceased all conversations, lessons, Mesnev\u00ee recitations, dhikr, and sem\u00e2 ceremonies thereafter. Subsequently, except for family talks, he did not provide traditional sohbet or spiritual training. He adopted the principle of \u201c\u00fbl\u00fc\u2019l-emre it\u00e2at\u201d (obedience to the authorities).<\/strong><\/span>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n

    Server Hilmi Bey<\/h2>\n Server Hilmi Bey was born in Istanbul in 1869. After graduating from Galatasaray Sultan\u00ee, he attended medical school and served in various roles related to his field. His connection with Ken\u2019\u00e2n Rif\u00e2\u00ee began at Galatasaray Sultan\u00ee. Although the two friends could not meet for a long time after graduation, they reunited around the age of thirty in Istanbul and maintained their friendship in a different way thereafter. Server Hilmi Bey was spiritually influenced by Ken\u2019\u00e2n Rif\u00e2\u00ee and dedicated himself to Sufism.<\/p>\n

    He was Ken\u2019\u00e2n Rif\u00e2\u00ee\u2019s closest friend in life. After Server Hilmi Bey\u2019s passing, Ken\u2019\u00e2n Rif\u00e2\u00ee said, \u201cServer was a paragon of humanity. Server was the elite of his era. We were so connected that even death could not separate us.\u201d This statement summarizes their friendship.<\/span>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n

    Calligrapher Aziz Efendi<\/h2>\n Among Ken\u2019\u00e2n Rif\u00e2\u00ee\u2019s disciples and caliphs was the famous calligrapher Aziz Efendi, who completed his calligraphy education at the Nuruosmaniye calligraphy school. He held many calligraphy authorizations and was known as \u2018ser\u00ee\u00fc\u2019l-kalem\u2019 among other calligraphers due to his distinctive style. Ken\u2019\u00e2n Rif\u00e2\u00ee described one of his first disciples and caliphs, Hattat Aziz Efendi, by saying, \u201cAziz has the modesty of Hz. Osman.\u201d He was invited by the Egyptian King Fuad I with an official invitation to write the Qur\u2019an and stayed in Egypt for ten years. For his work there, Aziz Efendi was promoted to the fourth rank called Ni\u015f\u00e2n-\u0131 Mec\u00eedi. He died in Istanbul on August 16, 1934, one year after returning from Egypt.<\/span>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n

    Sheikh Cem\u00e2l Efendi<\/h2>\n Sheikh Cem\u00e2l Efendi was married to Nazl\u0131 Han\u0131m, one of Ken\u2019\u00e2n Rif\u00e2\u00ee\u2019s disciples. He was also the uncle of the thinker and writer S\u00e2miha Ayverdi, another disciple of Rif\u00e2\u00ee. His official duty was as ni\u015fan m\u00fcmeyyiz (inspector of imperial decorations); he was responsible for preparing jeweled and encrusted decorations on behalf of the state. He is described as an honorable officer who honestly protected the Ottoman treasury. Sheikh Cem\u00e2l Efendi, who passed away during Rif\u00e2\u00ee\u2019s lifetime, was known for his sensitivity regarding halal and haram issues.<\/span>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n

    Sheikh Osman Hilmi Efendi<\/h2>\n Sheikh Osman Hilmi Efendi was one of Ken\u2019\u00e2n Rif\u00e2\u00ee\u2019s caliphs. Like the other caliphs, he passed away while Rif\u00e2\u00ee was still alive. Little is known about Sheikh Osman Efendi\u2019s origins and family. He was a Sufi characterized by states of love and ecstasy. With his Sufi knowledge, Osman Efendi was a prominent figure in greeting and conversational sessions. Holding the privilege of being Rif\u00e2\u00ee\u2019s chief caliph, he made significant contributions to the conversation circle through his questions and answers. Osman Efendi was noted for his character that emphasized effort and diligence in every matter.<\/span>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n
