Authorization from the Rifâiyye

During his stay in Medina, Ken’ân Rifâî completed his spiritual journey (seyrüsülûk) in the Rifâî method under Sheikh al-Mashayikh Hamza er-Rifâî and received his authorization (icâzet). Upon returning to Istanbul, his authorization was approved by the Meclis-i Meşâyıh (Council of Sheikhs), and he officially received the title of Rifâî sheikh.

Hamza er-Rifâî was born in Medina in 1865-66. He is described as having greenish-blue eyes, fair skin, and medium height. He was known for his powerful oratory and an impressive yet soft voice. He was one of the prominent figures of Medina; known for his dignity and solemnity, he was respected and trusted by both rulers and the public. Sources indicate that he spent most of his life between his home and the Prophet’s Mosque (Mescid-i Nebevî), mostly engaged in worship and dhikr.

Hamza er-Rifâî Dergâh

The dergâh of Hamza er-Rifâî is located in the old bazaar of Medina. The building features stone masonry arches and a tall crowned gate. This Rifâî Dergâh integrates harmoniously with the city and is designed appropriately as a house-dergâh relationship. Sources note that the architecture symbolizes the seeker’s spiritual path from multiplicity to unity and then from unity back to multiplicity. Passing through a door leading from the place of unity (tevhidhâne) to the place of retreat (çilehâne) and then back to life reinforces this concept. The connected house is intertwined with the Prophet’s Mosque and the Rawda, facing the Green Dome (Kubbe-i Hadrâ), under which the Prophet Muhammad’s tomb is located.
